Madeira travel planner: a local guide

The activities part of this site tells you what to do. The travel-planner part tells you how to plan around Madeira's specifics: micro-climate, narrow roads, scarce sandy beaches, fragmented public transport, two main airport approaches with different reliabilities, a tax-residency programme that draws digital nomads, and a tourist economy that runs hot in summer and quiet in winter.

I am Filipe Pereira, a Madeira local. The eight sub-pages below cover the planning questions visitors ask me most often, in the order they tend to come up. Read the first three (best time, getting around, where to stay) before booking. The other five are situational.

The eight planning angles

  • Best time to visit - month-by-month with weather, prices, festivals, and the days locals would not travel here.
  • Getting around Madeira - car rental vs the bus network vs taxi, plus the tunnel shortcuts that cut driving time by 30-45 minutes.
  • Where to stay - Funchal vs Calheta vs Santana vs Porto Moniz vs Ponta do Sol, by traveler type and budget.
  • Madeira with kids - activities that work by age, accessibility realities on this island, and the few calm-water beaches.
  • What to pack - the micro-climate makes packing for Madeira different from packing for the Algarve. Layers matter.
  • Madeira on a budget - daily budget tiers, the genuinely free big-impact things, and where to eat for under 15 EUR.
  • Digital nomad guide - Ponta do Sol Village, the coworking landscape, D7 visa basics, and what the actual cost of living looks like.
  • Multi-day itineraries - 3-day, 5-day, 7-day, and 10-day templates that link out to the activity pages.

How this section is sourced

Each page on this travel planner follows the same 5-step content pipeline as the activities pages: a SERP intelligence pass, a deep research pass against primary sources (visitmadeira.com, madeira.gov.pt, Diario de Noticias da Madeira), my own insider notes, an AI-assisted draft, and a manual quality check that includes a custom AI-tell sweep to remove templated phrases. Every page is signed and dated.
