Canyoning in Madeira: a local guide

Canyoning in Madeira is one of the few activities here that genuinely scales from "first-timer who is nervous about heights" to "experienced canyoner looking for class-3 technical routes." The water is warm enough between June and October, the operator scene is more honest than many people assume, and the routes themselves are short enough to fit into a half-day plus lunch.

I have taken first-timers through Rochao and Ribeira das Cales without drama. Both routes are forgiving. The rappels are short, the pools are deep enough to jump but shallow enough not to lose anyone, and the guides are used to nervous beginners.

RNAAT licensing: how to read a real licence

This is the single most important check before you book. A real Madeira canyoning operator licence is registered with RNAAT (Registo Nacional de Agentes de Animacao Turistica) and reads as a four-digit number plus year, like "RNAAT 244/2018" or "RNAAT 1161/2017". If a website only displays the words "RNAAT Verified" or "RNAAT licensed" without a specific number, that is not a real licence reference; that is marketing copy. Five operators currently hold valid current licences. Ask the operator directly for their RNAAT number and verify it on the official registry at registos.turismodeportugal.pt.

What to bring

A change of clothes in a dry bag, a pair of trainers you do not mind getting wet, and any prescription glasses on a strap. Wetsuit, helmet, and harness are provided by the operator. Shower facilities at most operator depots are basic; budget the drive back to your hotel for the proper hot shower.

Where to go next

For the route-by-route breakdown, operator comparison, and safety briefs, see the Canyoning tours in Madeira hub at canyoningmadeira.org. The site keeps a current list of best canyoning operators on the island with verified RNAAT numbers, plus separate pages for beginner-friendly canyoning routes and our canyoning safety in Madeira reference.
