Madeira Tours: your local guide
Madeira's online tourism presence is fragmented. VisitMadeira is comprehensive but generic. GetYourGuide is transactional. Operator websites do not link to each other, and most aggregators run the same handful of paid placements.
This site is the curated middle path. We are a thin tourism hub that points to the specialist sites we operate or trust for each activity, written by a Madeira local rather than by a marketing department.
Who runs this
I am Filipe Pereira, a Madeira-based travel guide and the author behind TrueMadeira.com. I have driven every coastal road on this island, walked every levada, and written about Madeira tourism for years. I sign every page on this site so you know who is speaking.
How this hub works
The home page tells you what is on the island. The activities page links you to twelve specialist categories. Each category has its own dedicated site where the real depth lives: operator comparison tables, route-by-route safety briefs, and current pricing. We do not try to cover everything in one place because depth matters more than breadth on this island.
If you want a quick orientation, the three things most first-time visitors get wrong:
- They overpack the schedule. Madeira rewards slow days. Plan one big activity per day plus one small one, not three.
- They do not rent a car. Public transport reaches the major towns; reaching the trail-heads, viewpoints, and good restaurants needs a car.
- They book everything through aggregators. Direct WhatsApp to local operators is usually 10-15% cheaper, and the operator gets a fair share rather than the platform.
Pick where to start
Most visitors land here looking for one of: hiking the levadas, a boat trip, a wine tour, or how to rent a car. All four have dedicated specialist sites linked from the activities page. If you only have a few minutes, the activities hub is the fastest path.
If you have more time, the travel-planner section (coming in V2.2) covers the meta-questions: when to come, where to stay, and how to budget.
