Madeira on a budget: a local guide

Madeira is not the cheapest European destination, but it is meaningfully cheaper than the Algarve or mainland Portugal coastal towns at peak season. With some local knowledge you can do a 5-day trip for around 80-100 EUR per day per person including accommodation. Here are the realistic budget tiers and the discount tricks that actually work.

Daily budget tiers (per person, mid-season)

Backpacker / shoestring: 50-70 EUR per day

  • Hostel dorm or budget guesthouse: 25-40 EUR per night
  • Two meals at family restaurants and one supermarket meal: 12-18 EUR
  • Free or low-cost activities (hiking, cable car, beach): 5-10 EUR
  • Public bus transport: 3-6 EUR

Mid-range: 100-160 EUR per day

  • 3-star hotel or apartment: 70-110 EUR per night
  • Three restaurant meals (including one upmarket): 30-45 EUR
  • One paid activity per day (boat trip, wine tour, levada shuttle): 25-50 EUR
  • Rental car shared with a partner: 12-20 EUR per day per person

Comfortable: 200-350 EUR per day

  • 4-star hotel: 130-200 EUR per night
  • Three restaurant meals including a higher-end dinner: 60-100 EUR
  • Premium activities (private guide, helicopter tour, fine wine tasting): 50-150 EUR
  • Rental car solo: 25-40 EUR per day

The free big-impact things

These are the activities I recommend to anyone doing the island on a budget:

  • Walk the Levada do Bom Sucesso back into Funchal. Take the cable car up to Monte (16 EUR), then walk back down through the levada. 4-5 hours, postcard views, free.
  • Pico Areeiro viewpoint at sunrise. Drive up before 06:30, watch the sun come up over the ridges. The car park is free.
  • Cabo Girao skywalk (the glass-floored cliff platform). Free entry. Best at 09:00 before the coach tours arrive.
  • Funchal Botanical Gardens are not free (8 EUR), but the Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro gardens nearby are (free with garden tour).
  • Camara de Lobos sunset walk. The fishing village west of Funchal. Wander the marina at sunset, free, scenic.
  • Forum Madeira shopping centre Saturday market. A real local food market for produce + cheese + bread.
  • Marina of Funchal evening promenade. Free, lively, and connects to the historic centre.
  • Most levada walks are free (parking sometimes costs 2-5 EUR).
  • Madeira Aquarium at Porto Moniz: only 7-9 EUR but small. Skip if budget is tight.
  • The natural pools at Porto Moniz are 3 EUR. Effectively free.

Where to eat for under 15 EUR

A typical Madeira lunch ("tasca" / family restaurant style): one of the daily fish or meat options, soup, drink, and dessert for 9-13 EUR. Dinner is usually 12-18 EUR for the same setup. Examples that locals actually go to:

  • O Almirante (Camara de Lobos): seafood, working-fishermen prices, no English menu but the staff will translate.
  • Tasca da Esquina (Funchal centre): grilled fish + local wine, 11-14 EUR.
  • Adega da Quinta (Estreito de Camara de Lobos, on the wine-tour route): grilled meats + local wine, 13-16 EUR.
  • Restaurante Atlantida (Funchal Lido area): set menus from 12 EUR.
  • Pingo Doce / Continente / Lidl supermarkets: their hot-counter prepared food is 4-7 EUR per main dish, suitable for a quick lunch.
  • Mercado dos Lavradores (Funchal central market): fresh fruit and vegetables for self-catering. The fish counter on the ground floor is genuinely cheap if you pick the daily catch.

Avoid: anywhere with a "Tourist Menu" advertised in five languages on a sandwich board outside. The food is fine but you are paying 30-50% above local price.

Discount tricks

  • Book direct via WhatsApp for activity tours. 10-15% off the aggregator price for most local operators. Message a day or two ahead.
  • No-deposit rental car operators save you the 1,500-2,500 EUR card hold; useful if your card has a low limit.
  • Buy your wine at Pingo Doce, not at the restaurant. A 10-year Bual is 25 EUR at the supermarket vs 65-80 EUR at a restaurant.
  • The "Funchal Card" (a tourist pass) is sometimes worth it for short trips with multiple paid attractions; check the included list against your plans.
  • Avoid taxis cross-island. Use Bolt or rent a car. Funchal-Calheta taxi is 70-90 EUR one way; a rental car costs 25 EUR for the day.
  • Stay in shoulder season (April-May, October-November). Hotel rates 30-40% under summer rates.
