About Madeira Tours
This site exists for a simple reason: most online Madeira tourism content reads like it was written by a tour aggregator. The voice is bland, the recommendations are advertorial, and the operator data goes stale within a year. The few sites that have a real local voice are usually one-person blogs that go quiet when the author moves on.
We tried a different shape. Madeira Tours is a curated hub run by a Madeira-based travel guide, with a separate specialist site for each major activity category. The content is signed, last-verified, and reviewed quarterly. Operator data is checked against the RNAAT registry and against real Google Maps reviews, not against the operator's own marketing copy.
Who I am
I am Filipe Pereira, the curator of this site and the author behind TrueMadeira.com. I have been writing about Madeira tourism for years. My day-to-day work is split between writing for TrueMadeira (broader cultural and travel coverage) and curating this hub (the activity-specific depth).
My credentials are the work itself. I have driven every coastal road on this island. I have walked the major levadas at every season. I have eaten in dozens of the local restaurants and can tell you which ones quietly raise prices when tour buses arrive. I am Portuguese, born and raised on the island, but I write in English because most of our visitors speak it.
Why this site exists
The honest answer: visitors deserve an honest local voice. Aggregators make money when you book through them, regardless of whether the operator is good. Operator websites make money when you book direct, regardless of whether their RNAAT is up to date. Neither party has an incentive to tell you which canyon operator is well-run versus which one cancels at the last minute.
I run this site so I can point visitors at the operators I would send a friend to.
How we make money
We disclose this on every page. We earn affiliate commissions on a small number of partner platforms (GetYourGuide, Viator, DiscoverCars where the operator opts in). We never raise the price you pay. The commission comes from the operator or platform, not from you. If we recommend a direct WhatsApp booking instead of an affiliate link, that costs us money but saves you 10-15%; we still recommend the direct path when it is the right call.
We do not run paid placements. Operators cannot pay to appear on our recommendation lists. The lists reflect our actual judgement, ranked by RNAAT verification, real review counts, and our own observations.
How we research
For each page on this site, we run a five-step content pipeline: a SERP analysis (what is already ranking and where the gaps are), a deep research pass against primary sources (visitmadeira.com, madeira.gov.pt, RNAAT registry, Google Maps verified reviews), a local-knowledge brief (Filipe's specific insider points), an AI-assisted draft for speed, then a manual quality check that includes a custom AI-tell sweep to remove templated phrases. The result is published, signed, and dated.
Trust and accuracy
Every page on this site has a "last verified" date. We re-check pages quarterly: operator status, pricing references, seasonal recommendations. If a page slips out of date, the next quarterly review catches it. If you spot something stale before we do, the contact page is the fastest way to reach me.
