Best time to visit Madeira

Madeira's micro-climate makes the "best time" question more nuanced than for most European destinations. The south coast (Funchal, Camara de Lobos, Calheta) has 300+ days of sun a year. The north coast (Sao Vicente, Porto Moniz, Faial) gets noticeably more rain. The high ridges hold cloud most mornings. The far west is the windiest. So "best time" depends on what you want to do and where.

The short answer: April-May and September-October are the sweet spots for first visits.

Month by month

January

Average daily high 18-20C on the south coast. Cool for swimming. Lowest hotel prices of the year (typically 30-40% off summer rates). Trails are open but tunnels and high-elevation sections are sometimes closed after storms. Whale watching is reduced. Carnival starts late January or early February depending on the year.

February

Carnival peaks the week before Lent. Funchal hosts the biggest parade in Portugal after Lisbon. Hotel rates jump for Carnival week then return to low-season. Weather is similar to January: 18-21C, occasional storms.

March

Spring starts. 19-22C. Madeira Flower Festival is usually late April but the floral build-up begins now. Trails reopen fully. Whale watching probability rises through March. A good month for off-peak hiking.

April

Madeira Flower Festival mid- to late-April. Funchal carpets its centre in floral installations. Hotels book up 4-6 weeks ahead. Otherwise an excellent month: 21-23C, low rain on the south coast, all activities running. Easter week is busy if it falls in April.

May

Probably the single best month for a first visit. 22-24C, low rain, manageable crowds. The Madeira Wine Rally was historically held early May; check current calendar. Trails are open and uncrowded. Boat trips run daily.

June

Sao Joao on June 24th: bonfires, jumping over them, sardines, in every village. The festival is a real local event, not a tourist setpiece. Visit Camacha or Curral das Freiras to see it done right. Weather: 24-26C, near-zero rain on the south coast.

July

Peak season starts. 26-28C, hot. The cruise-ship dock at Funchal is busy. Trails are crowded after 09:00. Hotel rates 30-50% above shoulder. Best for serious watersports, less ideal for hiking unless you start early.

August

Hottest month. 27-29C. Ferragosto / Assumption holiday week mid-August is when the rest of Portugal arrives, especially the Lisbon and Algarve crowd. Booking 8-12 weeks ahead is wise. The waters are at their warmest for diving and snorkelling.

September

Atlantic Festival fireworks competitions through September weekends. Trans Madeira MTB enduro race in early September. Weather softens to 25-27C. Hotel rates ease back. Probably the second-best month for a first visit.

October

22-25C. The "second spring" feel. Whale watching is still strong. The autumn light is excellent for photography. Madeira Nature Festival usually mid-October.

November

Rains arrive on the north coast. South coast still 19-22C and mostly dry. Boat trip weather is variable. Cheaper than October, less crowded. Good for digital-nomad arrivals settling in for winter.

December

End of December: the Funchal New Year fireworks. Used to hold the Guinness World Record for largest fireworks display until 2009 and is still the regional flagship. Madeira fills up the week between December 26 and January 2. Book 12+ weeks ahead.

Days locals would not travel

  • The first 48 hours after a major Atlantic storm warning. Trails are wet, levadas can flood, road crews need time to clear debris.
  • Mid-August week. Not because the weather is bad, but because everything is full and busy.
  • The two weeks straddling December 31 unless you specifically want the fireworks.

What this means for your booking

If you want all activities running with manageable crowds: aim for May 1 to June 20 or September 8 to October 20. If budget is the priority: late October through early December (excluding fireworks week). If you want festivals: April for flowers, June 24 for Sao Joao, December 31 for the fireworks. If you want sun and warm water for swimming: late June through September.
