Car rental in Madeira: a local guide
A car is non-optional unless you are staying in central Funchal for the entire trip. Public buses reach the major towns, but the trail-heads, viewpoints, levada starts, and the genuinely good restaurants are all car-only. Madeira has 55+ rental brands with FNC airport presence; only 11 are local Madeira-based, the rest are international chains or mainland Portugal white-labels.
Automatic-only fleets are scarce
If you cannot drive a manual transmission, book six to eight weeks ahead. Automatic stock on this island is limited; in summer the airport counters routinely run out. If you walk up at peak season without a booking and ask for an automatic, expect to pay a 50-80% premium over the published rate.
No-deposit operators
A few local operators (Stones, Carwave, Insularcar) hold no card pre-authorisation at all when you collect the car. That matters if your card has a low limit or if you do not want a 1,500-2,500 EUR hold sitting on it for the duration of your trip. International aggregators that subcontract to local fleets typically still apply the deposit. Book direct with the local operator if no-deposit matters to you.
Pickup type: counter, shuttle, meet-and-greet
This is the detail most visitors miss. Counter pickup means the operator has a desk inside FNC arrivals; you collect the keys there and walk to the car. Shuttle pickup means a five to fifteen minute van ride to an off-airport depot. Meet-and-greet means an operator employee meets you at the airport with the keys; this is the fastest if you have it. We tag every operator on the comparison table by pickup type so you can choose by tolerance.
VR1 vs ER coast road
The VR1 highway plus tunnels save 30-45 minutes on the FNC airport to Funchal drive vs the old ER coastal road. Tolls are included in most local operator rentals. Take the VR1 unless you specifically want the slower coastal scenery.
